COORDINATOR| MENTOR | FACULTY ADVISOR | STUDENT

RENAISSANCE COORDINATOR ensures that:

  • the student's learning experience is developmentally appropriate
  • the student proposal is coherent, doable and meets Vermont standards
  • the student documents the proposal appropriately
  • the student communicates learning
  • the study design and goals match the learning style of the student
  • the student maintains the rigor expected for the type of study being undertaken
  • approves the student proposal
  • student/mentor relationships are educational and productive
  • educational goals are met and appropriate credit is granted
  • communication is clear and frequent among student, mentor and faculty advisor
  • continual assessment through weekly meetings with student occurs
  • facilitates the success of the final presentation/ celebration and assessment process

MENTOR - The mentor is a professional OR someone with in-depth knowledge of the subject or skill. The mentor can but does not have to be a certified teacher.
The role of the mentor is to:

  • add depth and understanding to the student's study
  • help guide, critique, encourage, provide insight and structure to the student's study
  • meet with the student at least once a week
  • assist in the fulfillment of the student's independent learning plan
  • help assess the student's final presentation
  • bring any problems or concerns immediately to the attention of the coordinator
  • help in evaluating and suggesting changes to the program Return to top

 

 


FACULTY ADVISOR - A faculty advisor is required of any study designed to meet one of the 18.5 field of knowledge credits required for graduation. The faculty advisor is a certified Vermont teacher in the field most appropriately related to the student's study.
The role of the faculty advisor is to:

  • help improve the student proposal by identifying gaps
  • determine how much credit should be granted
  • give advice to the student/mentor team as needed
  • participate in the student's final assessment presentation and confirm the credit granted

NOTE: Unless the teacher has volunteered to be the official mentor, the role of the teacher is not to approve a proposal but to give advice to the student/mentor team, help improve the proposal and be part of the final jury which assesses the student's work.

STUDENT:
The role of the student is to:

  • write an initial proposal (with help and advice from mentor, faculty advisor and Renaissance coordinator as needed)
  • meet regularly with a mentor
  • notify the mentor or Renaissance coordinator prior to absences
  • be prepared each week with new work
  • attend to the four criteria which enable a student to pass a Renaissance study and receive academic credit (4 criteria: student writes a study proposal; student provides evidence of learning; student communicates his/her learning via a final assessment/celebration/presentation; student exerts the effort necessary to maintain the rigor expected for the particular student)
  • attend any seminars that might be offered to Renaissance students
  • maintain the rigor expected for the type of study being undertaken
