“Civil Disobedience”

Using Thoreau’s concept of “Civil Disobedience” we will be examining people and events in history that have also used peaceful protest to make a stand against political and/or social issues.

 

 

I would like everyone to choose a different person related to a particular issue. Some examples:

 

  1. Underground Railroad
    1. Harriet Tubman
  2. Nelson Mandela
  3. Leo Tolstoy
  4. Mahatma Gandhi
  5. Women’s Suffrage
    1. Elizabeth Cady Stanton
  6. Civil Rights Movement
    1. Martin Luther King
  7. Nuclear Weapons
  8. Vietnam War
  9. Anti-Apartheid
  10. Labor Unions

 

 

 

 

You should create a poster that includes the following (you will need a large piece of poster board!):

 

  1. At least four quotes that illustrate the perspective of the person or the group of people you have chosen.
  2. Include pictures of the person or the group of people and events.
  3. Description of the events.
  4. Explanation of the person or group of people’s beliefs.
  5. Definition of  “civil disobedience”.
  6. 1-2 page essay that connects Thoreau’s principles of “civil disobedience” with the person or group of people you have chosen. You should include quotes from Thoreau’s essay.

 

Note: You should include parenthetical documentation for the essay. You should turn in a work-cited page for this project.
