Honors American Literature

Summer Assignment

Here is the summer assignment that I promised! Take a look at all of the requirements and see me if you have any questions.  If over the summer you need to help, call me at 479-3109 or e-mail me at wpoohtown@aol.com.

The following is a list of requirements that you are to complete for the first day of class.

  1. Read Black Elk Speaks

This is a great book that documents the Native American experience.  It is rare to find such a great resource about Native American life since most Native American history was passed down orally. This is a book that you will need to pace yourself reading.

  1. Maintain a reflection journal

Use the journal to reflect on what you are reading.  Use it to pose questions, discuss issues that bother you, passages that you want to point out to the class. You will be keeping a journal the entire year.

  1.  Essay

After reading Black Elk Speaks write a 3-4 page essay. See the sheet attached entitled “Ideas for Literary Analyses” to support your work.  Your paper should be typed, doubled-spaced, include quotes, and have a “catchy” title.

  1. Creative connection

This is a chance for you to connect personally with the book.  The sky’s the limit!!

Have a great summer!!
