The Scarlet Letter

Diary/Scrapbook

The journal or diary was a popular method of recording thoughts, fears, and observations about other people and world events.  Your assignment is to choose one of the three main characters in the novel and create journal for this particular character. You must have at least 10 dated entries.  You should comment on the following:

The story covers years in the character’s life so you will observe changes in the character’s acceptance in the community, the physical and/or mental condition of your character, and his/her relationship with the other characters.

In addition, you will also create a scrapbook that is reflective of your character’s personality.  You need to think about what is important to each character and what objects they would keep.  When you include an object there should be a brief reflection about its significance.

You could combine the diary/scrapbook into one book.  It is up to you how you want to develop your book.  You can use the objects in your scrapbook in coordination with your journal entries.  For example, if you choose to become Hester, you might include the scarlet letter that she wore and include a reflection/diary entry about what it means to her and how her life has been impacted by it.  You should have at least five different objects in your scrapbook.

You will be given some class time to work.  We will be sharing these on November 2.
