Meeting of the Minds
Key Idea: How can the word "hero" be interpreted from a variety of perspectives?

We have discussed several qualities that might make someone a hero. We have discussed that a hero might be brave, intelligent, and giving. One of the characteristics most often discussed is heroic deeds or actions. We all have different opinions about what a heroic deed is and is not. In this activity we will be looking at the accomplishments and actions of famous people to determine whether they fit the profile of a hero.

 

Activity

1. Choose one person from the list of "famous" people that you like to work with during this activity.

  • Read their biography on the resource cards.
  • Using internet and book sources research about the person further.
  • Provide a works cited page.

2. In 1-2 pages discuss:

  • What do you know about the person you have selected?
  • What did the person accomplish?
  • Why did you select this person?
  • Do any characteristics of a hero apply to the person you have chosen? Explain.

Due by the end of class on June 3

 

3. Project: create a an informational poster that reflects the accomplishments of the person you chose. Include biographical information and pictures. The sources you use for this part of the project should be included on a works cited page.
