My Memories of Burt Hodgon by Carolyn Ennis

Burt Hodgdon came to Twinfield over 20 years ago to drive buses. I knew Burt before he came here as he had gone to school with my cousin David Brown of Woodbury.
Burt drove for about three years and then was asked if he would take the job of Maintenance and Transportation. Since then things have gone really well. He was proud of the job he was doing and expected everybody else to be proud too.
He worked on the baseball, softball and soccer fields with pride. It took a lot of work to put in the new softball field. Last fall, Burt and Richard fixed up the old dugout on the baseball field and put wire on the front to keep the kids from being hit with the baseballs.
Many nights after working all day he would go out and watch the kids play ball before going home. He was proud of our sports teams.
Every summer he would sit down with Doris and figure out the bus routes and have everything ready for the bus drivers before school would start.
Burt worked with everybody and filled in when we needed spare drivers no matter how sick he was. He just wouldn’t give up.
I used Burt as a sounding board many times. He probably knew more about me than anyone else will ever know. He was my confidant many times. I trusted him like I would a brother.
I will remember the times that I had to go bring back a bus from White River, Underhill, or Colchester. I would always tell him to make sure to get me back on the interstate, and then I could handle it from there.
We went to seminars to learn about cleaning. He was always interested in learning more and better and faster ways of doing things.
He would pick on Doris or Richard to no end. If he hurt feelings, he didn’t “apologize.” He would thump your shoulder and tell you to get over it. That was his way of apologizing.
I am going to miss him. I do all ready. I still cry at night or sometimes when I just think of him. I am sad that he had to leave us. He was way too young to be taken from us. He still had a lot of things to teach people.
