Welcome Back Fall 2025

Sunrise in the Northeast Kingdom.

Welcome Back CCSU Families,

My name is Matt Foster, and I have the privilege to serve as CCSU Superintendent. I want to send a warm welcome to all families in the Caledonia Central Supervisory Union. I hope our students’ days of sunshine and exploration were rich with chances to grow, play, and imagine. Those summertime experiences are wonderful, and they help our students and also our staff rejuvenate their energy levels and excitement for the new school year.

The start of school is always a fresh start, and each year offers a unique set of possibilities. Each and every student brings a unique blend of experiences to our classrooms, and no two school years are ever alike. Our teachers and school leaders recognize this deeply. We feel fortunate to partner with families as we design learning experiences that honor each student’s strengths, interests, and needs.

In the spirit of continuous improvement and shared purpose, I am excited to share our recently adopted CCSU Strategic Plan. This plan was developed over the last school year with the input of families, students, and staff. The CCSU Strategic Plan frames our work across all campuses with three clear goals:

1) CCSU will strengthen its culture so that schools are places where all people want to be.
2) CCSU will become a sought-after place for talented and caring professionals, so that students are supported by the most dedicated and skilled educators possible.
3) CCSU will cement its position as a highly effective union of schools, so that every student receives equitable and high-quality education across all campuses.

Why these goals matter to you as families, and to our students, is simple. A strong culture invites collaboration, curiosity, and joy in learning. A place that attracts talented, dedicated professionals ensures that every classroom benefits from expertise, care, and innovative practice. And a well-coordinated, high-performing union of schools guarantees that every student—wherever they are in the CCSU—is supported with consistent, high-quality opportunities to grow, learn, and succeed.

We are grateful for the partnership we share with families. Your involvement—attending conferences, sharing insights about your child’s strengths and challenges, volunteering when possible, and simply staying connected with your child’s teachers—amplifies the impact of our work. Together, we create the conditions for students to flourish academically, socially, and emotionally.

Welcome back, CCSU families. We are excited to have you back for the start of the school year on August 27.

ParentSquare

Each year brings new opportunities and changes for our students, families, and staff. One change is our shift to our new messaging system- ParentSquare. You may not have noticed it, but this newsletter came to you through ParentSquare instead of our previous messaging system.
What is ParentSquare?
ParentSquare is a secure and user-friendly platform that centralizes communication between school and home. It will serve as your new one-stop shop for school and CCSU announcements, messages from teachers, reminders, and more.

Vermont Law: No School Cell Phones

The State of Vermont is the latest state to ban cell phones and electronic devices in public schools. Vermont is the first state to ban public schools from communicating with students through social media. This law aligns with our community members' thoughts around cell phones in schools. CCSU surveyed our families last fall to determine their opinion on cell phones in schools: 67% of families were for having a cell phone-free learning experience. The law does not go into effect until next school year, but CCSU schools and many other schools throughout the state are starting a year early to work out the kinks in the procedures. Our administrators have put together a set of procedures and frequently asked questions about why this move is positive for our students. CCSU families can view the procedures here. We believe that our new school messaging system- ParentSquare will help alleviate some of the concerns around students not having access to cellphones during school.

Curriculum Corner-Patti Sprague

CCSU welcomes Patti Sprague as our new Director of Curriculum, Instruction, and Assessment. With over a decade of experience as a teacher, instructional coach, and principal, Patti is deeply committed to supporting both educators and students. She has successfully led professional action research teams and strengthened curriculum alignment across grade levels. Patti champions engaging and equitable educational experiences, making learning (especially math!) fun and accessible for students, families, and staff alike.
As principal of Braintree Elementary, Patti drove growth in literacy and math while fostering a student-centered culture that embraced place-based learning in natural settings. In her free time, she enjoys swimming, spending time outdoors, and cooking delicious meals for her favorite people.
Patti is eager to bring her collaborative spirit and passion for learning to CCSU and looks forward to building strong partnerships with teachers, families, and community members.

School Registration is ONLINE!

In the next day or two, your school will be sending out your access emails for the digital registration system. Thank you for taking the time to complete the digital registration forms through PowerSchool. As a reminder, this is required for all students, whether they are new to us or have already been enrolled at a CCSU School. No hard copies of these forms will be sent home. Please refer to the first document, “Parent Portal Account Instructions,” for instructions on accessing your account.

There have been some changes to the CCSU Annual Student Information Update Request form. There are now check marks under each parent/guardian to notate custody arrangements, including who the student lives with and who has pickup access to your student from school. Please make sure that these fields are checked off as they are correlated to our new ParentSquare Accounts and will help make this transition easier.

If you experience any issues trying to access your parent account, please contact your school's main office.

We appreciate you taking the time to complete these forms for your student(s).

Facility Updates in CCSU

Update from SU Facility Director, Tommy Bricco: Most of our campuses had facility improvements and repair work completed over the summer.
Danville students and staff will benefit from the HVAC work, which will allow for individual room temperature control. A lot of effort was aimed at reducing the wild temperature swings in our school building.
Twinfield benefited this summer from sidewalk and parking lot repair. The school also updated its gym to more efficient lighting. The repaving work will increase safety for our students and our community.
Cabot had a lot of external work focused on roofing and siding. There was also repair work done on the heating system. The buildings are now in better physical shape and they look great.
Barnet had its tennis courts resurfaced and its entry way door system replaced.
Waterford had their driveway and parking lot repaved.
Our schools are ready for our students, staff, and families.

NEEDED! Substitute Teachers

Each of our schools is seeking substitute teachers. We invite you to consider becoming a substitute in any or all of our schools. Classroom teacher substitutes earn $20 per hour, while paraprofessional substitutes earn $15 per hour. Your support is crucial in ensuring our students can continue learning when their teachers or paraprofessionals need to be away. It’s an exciting time filled with growth and collaboration! Please reach out to Katie Callan at the Central Office if you are interested. You may reach Katie at 802-684-3801 ext 207 or by email: katie.callan@ccsuvt.net

ACT 73/School Redistricting Task Force

Vermont's Act 73 transforms education by implementing a new statewide funding formula, consolidating school districts into larger regional units, and creating new statewide standards for class sizes. Key changes include a statewide uniform property tax, a foundation formula for funding schools, restrictions on public funds going to private schools, and a School District Redistricting Task Force (SDRTF) to create larger districts. While the law sets a vision, its full implementation depends on the Legislature's approval of a map with new school districts with a minimum size of 4,000 students. The law has an uncertain timeline and fiscal impact. If the law is fully implemented, public education in the CCSU communities will change dramatically. There is a great concern around class sizes impacting current school operations and potential government reorganization away from local control, which will impact all of the CCSU school districts, but especially school districts with middle and/or high schools. Several of our school boards have already reached out to the School District Redistricting Task Force about their school district’s preferences for placement in the newly proposed redistricted school maps. You may find out more information about the task force here.
