Eliza Cleary

Current town: Plainfield

Degrees: Bachelor of Arts in Education and Art, Middlebury College, Currently pursuing an endorsement to her math license

Job Title: Middle School Math Teacher

Background

Eliza graduated from Twinfield in 2020. She rejoined the Twinfield  community near the end of the 2024-2025 school year as an  interventionist and moved to the middle school math position this  school year.

Finding her place:

Eliza describes herself as a bit shy and so she found it a great fit for her  first “real” teaching job to be in a building and with a community that  she was already so familiar with. Although it could be a little confusing  initially to draw a clean line between her sense of Twinfield from the  perspective of a student versus that of a teacher, she has settled into a  team that has given her a positive sense of her place in the school.

Math and Art:

Eliza studied art in college; her primary medium was painting. Although  many people find them almost opposites, she recognizes parallels  between math and art, and particularly how people find both very  polarizing. People often consider themselves a “math person” or hate it,  similar to the way people often “get” art or don’t. Eliza is very  interested in exploring how to combine math and art to break down  those polarizing instincts and draw more people into both. Far from  seeing math and art as two very different areas of study, she sees so  much math in art, and vice versa (for example, the rule of thirds in  photography or the Fibonacci sequence). Creativity is a large part of  both art and math, and Eliza hopes to encourage students to explore  that creativity in her class to help them discover creative solutions to  problems and creative ways to conceptualize different mathematical  concepts.

For fun:

Eliza plays the mandolin and enjoys snowboarding!
