National Honor Society – A Busy and Impactful First Semester

Posted Date: 02/16/26 (09:00 AM)

Semester 1 has been an incredibly active and productive time for our National Honor Society. In early fall, eligible juniors and seniors submitted letters of interest for membership, and we were excited to welcome new members to the organization. Their fresh ideas and enthusiasm have strengthened our weekly meetings and energized our work.

This year, we set a goal of increasing our involvement within the school community while boosting student engagement and morale. One new initiative has been the launch of “Friday Frenzies,” a weekly Friday event designed specifically for high school students. These events range from interactive games during community meetings to practical activities that help students build skills and complete important tasks, such as course registration. To support these efforts, NHS members have also organized fundraising activities to provide prizes and incentives.

In addition to these new initiatives, we have continued our long-standing traditions. Our annual December fundraiser, The Penny Challenge, was a tremendous success, raising more than $600 for the Onion River Food Shelf. Over the two weeks leading up to December break, classes worked together to collect coins and friendly competition helped drive participation. It was a meaningful opportunity for students to give back to the local community.

In January, our focus shifted to preparations for the high school Winter Carnival, a beloved tradition that is now more than 30 years old. While specific activities have evolved over time, the positive energy and school spirit that fill the building each year remain constant. We look forward to another memorable celebration.

Immediately following Winter Carnival, our attention will turn to our next major service event: Green Up Vermont. Over the coming weeks, students will organize and prepare to participate in this statewide effort, heading out into the community—rain or shine—to help keep our roads and public spaces clean. Participants will earn community service hours while contributing to the beauty of our state.

These events require significant planning, leadership, and dedication. We are deeply grateful to our NHS student leaders, whose hard work and commitment make these opportunities possible for our school community.
