Our trip to Billings Farm was really fun. It was a little short, but activity packed! Our next trip is to Shelburne Museum on Friday, the 14th of June. For this trip there is no program, we will all be taking self-guided tours. We are still looking for chaperones if you are available! On Monday we will be going to Boulder Beach to celebrate the end of the year. We have hired two lifeguards and can use chaperones there as well. Please let me know if you are able to volunteer for one of these trips. Thanks for your support!
Happy almost summer! We have had a busy, yet productive year in third grade. I am so proud of all the new skills these children have learned. It is so gratifying for a teacher to see the children's interest when they are learning about our world or animals. You could have heard a pin drop in the room when they were introduced to multiplication! They just have a natural interest in learning. As the year comes to a close, I find it hard to let them go! Bt they are ready for their next adventure in fourth grade. Thank you for sharing your children with me! I will miss each and every one of them.

Happy Spring, finally!
I hope everyone had a restful, healthy spring break. We have ECO this Thursday and the woods are still wet. Please be sure that your child is prepared to participate in our ECO lesson. It would be a great idea to send in an extra pair of indoor shoes and a change of clothes in case they get wet. We are starting a new Theme unit about landforms and how they contribute to farming. We will be looking at land and its changes over time, both naturally and changes made by people. We will wrap this unit up with field trips to local farms and to Billings Farm in Woodstock, where the children will learn what it’s like to be a child on a farm in the 1800's. It promises to be a lot of fun! Please stay tuned for information about our upcoming field trips as we would love to have volunteer chaperones on these trips. Thanks for all of your support! Next week we will be doing the first part of our mandated standardized testing, the SBAC. For third graders this is the first time and can be a little stressful. Please ensure your child that they only need to do their best and take it seriously, but at the same time, know that this is not a report card grade. So many of the kids worry about that! There will be scheduled breaks, including outside breaks, and snacks for the children while they test. We have also split up the testing so that it is not such a long time sitting in front of a screen. Please call with any questions or concerns, and as always, you are more than welcome to pop in! I hope everyone has had a restful, healthy break. Hopefully the children have had plenty of fresh outside air! On Friday, before our winter break, our class participated in our annual Read-A-Thon. It was a peaceful, productive day. Everyone made themselves cozy with snacks, a stack of books, and some had pillows and blankets! I will post pictures as soon as I am back to school. The Read-A-Thon is something grades 3 and 4 do to raise money for our end of the years field trips. While we haven't locked anything down just yet, I will keep you posted about the trips as soon as we are able to reserve them. Please send in your child's pledge money when you are able.
When we return to school on March 6th, we will be starting a new unit in Literacy. We will begin to study Traditional Fiction and learn how to adapt a Fairy Tale and make it our own. While our World Geography unit was focused on facts, this unit will be more about learning the genre and being creative! The writing aspect of our Traditional Fiction will be more focused on penmanship and grammar, so this writing will not be done using technology. In third grade math we will still be practicing multiplication! We are learning to do multi digit multiplication with partial product, using our rods. We will be beginning a graphing unit and then diving into fractions. This is always the best time of year in math! I look forward to returning to school and seeing my much missed students! Classroom News Mrs. Scott's Third Grade February 5, 2019
Hello Families, We have been so busy with our World Geography projects. We have created our slide shows, made maps of our countries, and created a globe. The children have been working hard and loving it! We continue with working on multiplication in third grade math and I am always reminding the students to practice their facts for 5 minutes nightly. This will help them so much! Next week we have an early release on Thursday, the 14th. As you know it is also Valentine's Day. We will have a Valentine exchange in the classroom before lunch. As so many Valentines come with candy, I ask that if you would like to donate a snack for the occasion, that it would be something not loaded with sugar. Fruits, cheese and crackers, or anything else would be fine. Thanks for your support! Ask your child about our bears, Lucky and Holly. Each day we have a different Bear Sitter and it is getting to be a pretty exciting job to have in the classroom! We will have ECO on Thursday! Please send your child with appropriate clothing as we will be outside for the whole morning.
I just wanted to take a minute to wish everyone safe and peaceful holidays! Our kids have been working so hard and are learning all about our seven continents. They have been creating their own globe and are having fun! October 30, 2018
ECO IS BEGINNING! ECO will start on Thursday, November 1st, 2018. We will be outside for approximately two and a half hours. Please be sure your child is dressed to be in the woods on that day. We go out in all kinds of weather! Please send them with boots, gloves, an extra layer to stay dry, and jackets. We will come back inside at lunch time (12:00), but it will feel like a really long morning if students aren’t comfortable! Thank you for your support! Halloween Our class will participate in the annual Halloween parade at 2:00 on Wednesday. After the parade we will come back to class and have a brief celebration. If you would like to send in a treat for the celebration, I’m sure the kids will appreciate it! Students can wear their costumes to school if it is easier for them, however masks or anything that is distracting to themselves or others will need to wait until 2:00 to be put on. Again, thanks for your support! |
